What are the Most Beautiful Rare Fancy Colors in Diamonds?

The fancy color diamonds are out of this world: Red, green, purple and orange are the rarest natural diamond colors, followed by pink and blue. More common, although still quite rare, are “fancy” color grades of strongly yellow and brown diamonds. When the color of a diamond is deep and pronounced, the diamond is specially graded as a fancy color.

Most of us think of diamonds as being colorless or nearly so, but in truth most diamonds do have some color. The absence of color is usually considered best in diamonds, but there are a few diamonds that occur in nature with color so extreme and remarkable that these exceptionally rare colors are considered desirable. A large fancy colored diamond with bold strong color is very unusual and thus highly valuable. Keep in mind that color is more noticeable in larger diamonds than in small.

Certain mines are known for producing specific colors. For instance, the Argyle in Australia is a major producer of pink diamonds. Argyle was also an early promoter of colored stones and introduced elegant-sounding trade names such as Champagne and the even darker Cognac for its brown diamonds.

GIA Grading Scale for Fancy Colored Diamonds: Faint to Deepest and Darkest

These special and rare diamonds have their own fancy color grading scale. The larger the stone, the more noticeable the color becomes. Once the characteristic color is decided, there are color distinctions as follow from weakest to optimal. The Gemological Institute of America or GIA uses the following grades for fancy color diamonds:

• Faint

• Very Light

• Light

• Fancy Light (for yellows, first yellow stronger than Z)

• Fancy

• Fancy Intense

• Fancy Vivid

• Fancy Dark

• Fancy Deep

The Allure and Mystery and Cost of Rare Fancy Color Diamonds

These highly unusual and rare diamonds can be exquisitely beautiful. They may be the perfect choice as secondary stones used to accent a traditional colorless center stone, or these remarkable fancy color diamonds may be used on their own to create special pieces of breath-taking jewelry with unique flair attributable to both their innate beauty, mystery and of course, rarity. Add to that, these are expensive! You can be sure that these premium diamonds are priced in proportion to their rarity, too. After all, color is one of the four C's of diamond value -- the 4 C's being Cut, Clarity, Carat Weight, and COLOR.
